Tamba Waras

Pura Luhur Tamba Waras is a sacred temple nestled in the lush highlands of Sangketan Village, Penebel, Tabanan, on the southern slopes of Mount Batukaru. Steeped in legend, this revered site traces back to the 12th century, when a Tabanan king was spiritually guided to a healing spring in the forest. After regaining his health, he commissioned the temple, its name meaning “medicine and restored wellness.”

Known locally as an “Apotik Niskala” (unseen pharmacy), Tamba Waras is a place of deep healing, both physical and spiritual. The temple is home to the Sapta Gangga, a series of seven sacred fountains where visitors can take part in melukat or purification rituals guided by temple priests. Each fountain holds symbolic meaning, part of a ceremonial process designed to cleanse the body, mind, and soul.

Surrounded by dense forest and medicinal plant gardens, the temple offers a peaceful retreat into nature and spirit. Its cool mountain air and quietude make it an ideal space for reflection, ritual, or simply reconnecting with Bali’s ancestral wisdom.

A visit to Tamba Waras is more than a cultural journey, it’s a healing experience rooted in tradition, intention, and reverence for the unseen forces that shape life on the island.
